Everyone needs to experience the crazy world of artist Craig Drennen. I have been a fan for a long time now. Drennen shows in Boston at Samson Projects, and is currently showing a new body of work at Gallery Stokes here in Atlanta. See an interview with him on Big Red and Shiny, in the Phantom Zone collumn by my husband Steve Aishman.

Heidi Aishman: You Can’t Win That!
I was intrigued to hear about Heidi Aishman’s show, “You Can’t Win That!” at Gallery Stokes. As a child, I had an obsession with stuffed animals (what little girl didn’t?). I was always on the hunt for new additions to the collection. In a nutshell, the essence of Aishman’s show is just that: her obsession with the claw machine, the prizes contained inside, and the endless hunt for stuffed animals.
The claw machine, often found in arcades, supermarkets, or movie theatres, has a notorious reputation for its difficulty and (especially for fiscally concerned parents) for being a waste of money. Aishman states that her current work is about the desire for the unobtainable — after being told that she too would never win the claw machine. Heidi Aishman’s “You Can’t Win That!” is at Gallery Stokes in Castleberry Hill through April 18.
Aishman will give an Artist Talk at the gallery on Saturday, April 11 at 2 p.m.
“A modern-day hunter, Heidi Aishman has mastered the claw machine. She takes her prizes home and mounts them like trophies, documenting each step. She says, “This recent body of work is about desire. We covet what we can’t have, we want what we are told is unobtainable, we desire things we do not need and we want what others have. I want to win the claw machine because after the first time I won, someone said, ‘There’s no way. You can’t win that.’
Heidi Aishman is originally from Boston and currently lives and works in Atlanta GA. She has taken part in numerous group and solo exhibitions in the United States, and South America including: Arte a Limite, Chile, Jose A. Mulazzi Museum, Tres Arroyos, Argentina: Coronel Dorrego Cultural Center, Dorrego, Argentina; Bridge Art Fair, Miami, FL; High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; Apexart, New York, NY; Rhys Gallery, Boston, MA; The Artists Foundation, Boston, MA; Fraser Gallery, Bethesda, MD; DeCordova Museum, Lincoln, MA. Heidi has curated numerous exhibitions and has been a contributing writer to Big Red and Shiny online Arts Journal for over 4 years. “
